AWS Certification Guide: Overview and Career Paths

AWS provides multiple services for cloud-based computing, storage, and networking. The two most prominent are Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) and Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3). The company also provides database and analysis services, applications, developer tools, etc.


Just as Amazon is the benchmark for consumer products, AWS has so far been the leader in the on-demand cloud computing market. Comcast, Dow Jones, Expedia, Kellogg's and Netflix are just a few companies that trust AWS to keep their businesses active. Given that the public cloud market is expected to reach US$236 billion by 2020, AWS can maintain a significant advantage over its closest competitors Google, Microsoft and IBM. 

Considering that AWS actually has space in the cloud, the company's certified product portfolio is very simple. AWS currently provides a foundation, three certifications, two professionals and three professional certificates. There are five categories in total:

Architecture: These certifications recognize professionals who design and implement distributed systems on the AWS platform. Candidates can start with AWS Certified Solutions Architect-Associate and then go to Professional.

Development: These certifications are used to identify people who develop and maintain applications on AWS. The entry-level certificate is AWS Certified Developer-Assistant, followed by AWS Certified DevOps Engineer-Professional.

Operations: In order to support architecture and development, the AWS platform must be managed and optimized. The quasi-level operation certification is aimed at the system operator administrator (SysOps). Because SysOps and DevOps are so closely linked, this category includes AWS certified DevOps engineer-professionals as top certification.

Cloud-AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner Cloud is an entry-level AWS credential that focuses on AWS Cloud technology, concepts and security. Certified Cloud Practitioner is a prerequisite for AWS professional certification, or preparation of grade certificates for employees.

Professional: AWS professional certification focuses on skills related to specific technologies, including networking, big data, and security.

Each certification requires candidates to pass an exam with multiple choice questions. The entry-level exam costs $100 and takes up to 90 minutes to complete, while the related level exam requires 130 minutes to complete and costs $150 (the practice exam costs $20). The length of the professional and professional level exams is 170 minutes and the cost is $300. To ensure that professionals maintain the latest levels of skills, AWS requires certificate holders to recertify every two years. This means taking the recertification exam for the certificate you currently have. Voucher holders are eligible for a 50% discount voucher for recertification exams.

AWS Architect Certification

The architecture category has two certifications: AWS Certified Solution Architect-Assistant and AWS Certified Solution Architect-Professional. Both certifications focus on the skills required to design distributed applications and systems on the AWS platform.

The AWS Certified Solution Architect-Joint Examination demonstrates the ability of candidates to design and implement solutions that meet customer needs, recommend best practices, and manage solutions throughout the lifecycle. The focus of the exam is on five areas: the design of resilient architectures, the definition of high-performance architectures, the specification of security architectures and applications, the design of cost-optimized architectures, and the definition of operationally superior architectures. AWS expects an assistant architect to have at least one year of hands-on experience (including computing, networking, storage, databases, and AWS services such as deployment and management services), and is very familiar with the best practices on the AWS platform.

AWS Certified Solution Architect-Assistant

AWS Certified Solutions Architect-Professional exams cover more of the same topics as advanced collections. For example, professional architects need to understand how to migrate more complex multi-tier applications to AWS and handle deployment.Operation of large companies. AWS recently updated their exams, and candidates will pay more attention to the design of applications and distributed systems in AWS. The exam covers five areas: organizational complexity design, new solution design, migration plan, cost control, and continuous improvement of existing solutions. AWS recommends at least two years of experience in designing and implementing cloud architectures on AWS, and the ability to act as a leader or consultant in architecture design issues. Associated level credentials are recommended, but not required.

AWS Certified Solution Architect-Professional

AWS Development Certification

The AWS development category includes AWS Certified Developer-Assistant and DevOps Engineer Certified AWS-Professional Certificates, whose goal is professionals who develop and maintain applications running on the AWS platform.

AWS Certified Developer: Partners must be able to select the appropriate AWS service for the application in question, use the AWS Software Development Kit (SDK) and write code, combined with code-level security, such as identity management and access, encryption, etc. . The candidate must also be proficient in AWS services, AWS architecture, and cloud-based applications that use AWS. There are five inspection areas: deployment, security, development using AWS services, refactoring, and monitoring and troubleshooting. AWS recommends that candidates have at least one year of experience in developing applications for Amazon Simple Storage Service and other AWS services. They must also understand a programming language and understand the best services and best practices of AWS.

AWS Associate Certified Developer

AWS certified DevOps engineer-professionals are focused on configuring and managing distributed application systems running on AWS.This may involve continuous delivery methods, automation of security controls and compliance verification, monitoring and recording, and maintenance of operating tools. AWS recently updated the exam: the current domain is SDLC automation, configuration and infrastructure management, such as code, monitoring and logging, policy and standard automation, incident and incident response, and high availability, fault tolerance and recovery before disaster. To obtain the DevOps engineer certification, AWS recommends that the applicant have an AWS-certified creator-assistant certificate and participate in a DevOps engineering course on AWS. In addition, AWS recommends at least two years of relevant experience in related technologies and programming languages, automation, scripting, and agile processes.
