Oracle Certification Guide: Overview and Career Paths


Oracle provides a variety of hardware and software solutions designed to simplify and enhance IT capabilities. Perhaps known for its core database software, the company also provides cloud solutions, servers, engineering systems, storage, etc. Oracle has more than 430,000 customers in 175 countries/regions, approximately 138,000 employees and more than $37.7 billion in revenue.

Over the years, Oracle has developed an extensive certification program. Today, it includes six levels of certification, covering nine different categories, and has more than 200 personal certificates. Considering the depth and breadth of the program and the number of Oracle customers, it is not surprising that the demand for Oracle certification is high.

The Oracle application product certification category provides more than 60 individual certificates in 13 products or product groups (including Siebel, E-Business Suite, Hyperion, JD Edwards EnterpriseOne and PeopleSoft). Most of these certificates are awarded to certified implementation experts for specific applications, and various certified expert certificates are also provided. Application certification is for individuals with experience in selling and implementing specific Oracle solutions.

The latest certification category for Oracle is Oracle Cloud, which covers Java Cloud and various Oracle Cloud certifications, including Oracle Database Cloud. Cloud certificates are divided into seven sub-categories:

Oracle database certification

Certification in the Oracle database category is for individuals who develop or use Oracle databases. Mainly divided into three categories: database application development, MySQL and Oracle databases.

Note: Oracle Database 12c has been redesigned for cloud computing (belonging to the Cloud and Database certification categories). The current version is Oracle Database 12c R2, which includes other enhancements for in-memory databases and multi-tenant architecture. MySQL 5.6 has been optimized for performance and storage, so it can handle larger data sets.

Oracle Enterprise Management Certification

The Oracle Enterprise Manager certification pathway provides candidates with the opportunity to demonstrate their skills in application, middleware, database and storage management. The Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c certified deployment expert exam (1Z0-457) proves the candidate’s experience in physical, virtual and cloud environments and the design, installation, deployment, reporting and support of Oracle Enterprise Manager.

Oracle Database Foundations Certified Junior Assistant

The Junior Assistant Certificate certified by the Oracle Database Foundation is suitable for people who participate in Oracle Academy through a university or university program, computer and database teachers, and individuals who study database and computer science. As a beginner-level certification, junior certification partners are for people who have practical experience in Oracle database products. To obtain this certificate, candidates must pass the Oracle database (primary exam) (1Z0-006).

Oracle Certified Associate (OCA)-Oracle Database 12c Administrator

OCA certification measures DBA's daily skills in operating and managing databases. The candidate must pass the SQL exam and must pass another Oracle database management exam. Candidates can choose one of the following SQL exams:

  • Oracle database 12c SQL (1Z0-071)
  • Oracle Database 12c: SQL Basics (1Z0-061) Note: This exam will be deleted on November 30, 2019.
  • Candidates must also pass the Oracle Database 12c: Installation and Administration exam (1Z0-062).

Oracle Certified Professional (OCP)-Oracle Database 12c Administrator

OCP certification covers more advanced database skills. You must have the OCA 12c database administrator certification, complete the required training, submit the course submission form, and pass the Oracle Database 12c: Advanced Management (1Z0-063) exam.

Professionals who hold an Oracle Database 11g certified professional administrator certificate or an Oracle Database 12c certified professional administrator certificate can pass the Oracle DBA upgrade exam (1Z0-074) to upgrade to an Oracle Database 12cR2 certified professional management certificate.

Oracle Certified Master (OCM)-Oracle Database 12c Administrator

To obtain OCM 12c database administrator certification, you must have OCP 12c database administrator certification, complete two advanced courses, and pass the advanced exam (12cOCM) for Oracle Database 12c certification. Please fill out the course submission form and submit the compliance suite requirements.

Oracle Certified Expert (OCE)-Oracle 12c Database

OCE 12c database certification includes maximum availability, Data Guard administrator, RAC and grid infrastructure administrator, and performance management and optimization credentials. All these certifications involve prerequisite certifications. Performance management and adjustment take OSP 12c database as a prerequisite, and Data Guard administrator certification requires OCP database 12c certificate. RAC and Grid Infrastructure Manager provide candidates with maximum flexibility, allowing them to choose between OCP 11g database, OCP 12c database, Oracle Certified Expert-Practical Application Cluster 11g and Grid Infrastructure Administration.

Once the necessary credentials are obtained, candidates can pass the exam to obtain a Data Guard administrator, RAC and grid infrastructure administrator or performance and tuning management. By obtaining OCP 12c plus grid infrastructure management and RAC and data protection management certification, you can obtain the maximum availability certificate.
